Whangarei

Around 35 minutes from Camp Waipu Cove is Whangarei, New Zealand’s northern-most city and a great place to explore on a day trip while staying with us at our Northland holiday park. Whangarei offers all the great shopping, variety of cafes and fun activities to be expected of a city.

Quayside is the place to go to see beautiful yachts moored in the marina, and to enjoy the stylish bars, cafes and restaurants that line this very pretty and colonial-styled Town Basin. Also at the Town Basin is the National Clock Museum and a variety of art galleries and quality gift stores. You’ll also find a great range of art galleries and crafts for sale in the Waipu area, close to our Waipu Cove holiday park accommodation.

There are plenty of things to do to keep you busy in this thriving Northland city. Visit the Whangarei Museum or the native bird recovery centre, or take one of Whangarei’s picturesque bush walks. Whangarei Falls offers a gorgeous walk and is one of Northland’s beautiful attractions – a pristine and awe-inspiring sight, well worth a visit.

The Whangarei area is also home to over 100 stunning beaches and bays. Head out to Tutukaka and visit the beautiful Whale Bay, the popular Matapouri or book a fishing or diving charter from the Tutukaka Marina. Whangarei Heads is another area of breathtaking scenery. Visit the small bays nestled around Mount Manaia or take the drive out to the well-known surfing spot of Ocean Beach. After a long day of exploring the coast, travel back to our Waipu Cove camping ground for a comfortable stay.
