Waipu Museum
The Waipu Museum and Information Centre is right in Waipu town centre and offers a fascinating insight into the history of the Waipu area, including the settlement of Waipu by Scots highlanders in the 1850s. The annual Caledonian Highland Games celebrates our Scottish heritage. The January 1st festival attracts contestants and visitors worldwide. Book your Christmas and New Year Waipu Cove camping or cabin accommodation from March 1st each year.

The Waipu Heritage Centre also serves as official Information Centre, offering information on local activities and attractions, including visits to wildlife refuges and spectacular private gardens.

Also available at the Waipu Museum is information on the Waipu Heritage Trail – a great Northland activity, which takes you to all the historical places in the area. You can purchase a map of the trail for $5.

Mangawhai Museum
On the village side of Mangawhai is the small and attractive Mangawhai Museum, which is open 10am - 4pm daily (except Christmas and New Years days).

The Kauri Museum
The Kauri Museum is an exceptional and impressive place to visit – and a ‘must see’ Northland attraction during your stay at our Waipu Cove holiday park.

Discover the mighty, towering kauri tree, its timber and its gum – and the fascinating history of kauri and pioneering settlers in New Zealand. See priceless kauri antiques, a real steam sawmill, magnificent carvings and the world’s best kauri gum display!

You’ll also see outstanding displays, real kauri trees (including one swamp kauri that is over 45,000 years old) and original early New Zealand photos. The Sterling Wing is also exceptional – this is a six room circa 1900 home complete with original furniture and décor, dressed models and antique household goods. The Kauri Museum also boasts a large, top-quality gift store where you can take home your very own Kauri treasure or superb New Zealand souvenir.

You will find this huge museum at Matakohe – approximately a one hour drive from Camp Waipu Cove. As Northland’s largest undercover attraction, The Kauri Museum is the perfect thing to do in Northland on a rainy day!
